November Haiti Trip 2015 – Day 3

Saturday was a busy day for our team and it began where we left off… shoes and clothes for the kids.

A Sea of Shoes for the Kids

A Sea of Shoes for the Kids

We started the morning by getting out more shoes and clothes so more kids could come by and get them. Friday we had only gone through about half of the children Pastor John has in his ministry, so this morning got busy really quick as more children came by. In addition to the Success Ministry kids, word had gotten out that American Missionaries were at John’s place giving away shoes. Throughout the day we would also encounter other children handing us their beat-up sandals through the cracks of the gate. We tried our best to accommodate all of them that we could.

Bagging Food

The next order of business for the day was food distribution. We were able to purchase enough rice, beans and oil to distribute to about 100 families. John does a great job organizing this type of giving in the community. He knows the ones who need food the most and hands out tickets for people to come by and receive a bag of rice, beans, and oil. We learned that most of the people we would be serving only eat one meal per week. Usually they eat on Sunday and so Saturday is a perfect day for doing the distribution. After we purchased the food, we spent a good amount of time bagging the rice and beans into individual baggies and pouring oil into used soda bottles. Then at 2:00 the families started arriving. This is part of the service that is so rewarding. So many people, in so much need, thanking us in creole… “mesi”. Quickly our team learned to respond “Bondye beni ou”, meaning God bless you (pronounced: bone jhay ben EEE ooo). We always want them to know this blessing comes from God and not from us.

At 3:00 it was time for the games ministry. Every week children from all over the community of Merger come to the soccer (futbol) field to play games, to learn about Jesus, and then have a meal. Team members Mike and Cynthia actually decided to suit up and play futbol with the older kids. This is super competitive and these kids really can play well. Our team members only lasted a few rounds but had a great time participating with them. The rest of us spent time playing frisbee, blowing bubbles, and thumb wrestling the younger kids. This is always one of the highlights of the trip because you get to be a part of what makes these kids happy each week.

Teaching the Children

Teaching the Children

When things got all settled down, they called all the children together and they wanted one of us to tell them a Bible story. So team member David told them the story of Ehud and Eglon from the book of Judges. The message compared the Israelite deliverer, Ehud to Jesus and his adversary, Eglon to our sins. After the story, it was time to go back down the mountain and share their weekly meal. The small children love to grab our hands and lead us back down the steep path. It is not unusual to have three or more children holding your arms dragging you down the steep incline back to the house where they will eat.

Feeding the Children

Feeding the Children

When we got to the house we were astonished to find all of the benches completed! Children were all seated on the benches and Pastor Omilga was leading them is songs of praise. They were singing, “10,000 reasons” in Creole when we all got there. It was a beautiful sight… one that brought tears to our eyes. Footprints of Charity has been funding this weekly feeding for over a year and a half and it is so rewarding to see what those funds do for these children! If you are a child-sponsor, thank you SO much. We hope each of you can see what your monthly contributions are doing in these children’s lives! We spent the rest of the afternoon serving the food to the kids and handing out treats to them.

What a rewarding day in God’s service! We all are so thankful to be able to be a part of God’s work in this area of the world.
